Her company, called Edge of Your Seat (www.eoyseat.com), rejuvenates beloved woven furniture pieces in rattan, cane, wicker, Danish cord, reed, Lloyd loom and others. Her customers bring in their cherished antiques, heirlooms and one-of-a-kind pieces for some tender loving care.
"I've always been inspired by artisan/entrepreneurs," explains Kim. "I've always loved working with my hands so it seemed natural for me to get into this particular business."
A great example of a well-defined niche business, Edge of Your Seat does more than just restore woven furniture. "We send furniture care and maintenance tips to our customers and welcome their questions anytime, long after they've left our shop," Kim says.
Approved for a loan from the Canadian Youth Business Foundation (www.cybf.ca), Kim launched her business in 2007. "When my 80-year-old employer of 10 years announced his retirement, I decided to continue developing his rather rare and wonderful craft skills through my own business," Kim says.
Thrilled to be her own boss, Kim says the worst part of self-employment is "skipping lunch too often!"
Her advice to other new entrepreneurs is to ask for advice. "Running a small business involves many variables and potential risks, so things can get a little overwhelming at times," she says. "By seeking objective points of view from trusted advisers I have been rewarded with many valuable insights."
Kim's future plans include collaborating with other furniture specialists on some exciting design projects, immersing in the art of weaving and continuing to hone her already impressive skills as a furniture restorer.
"The possibilities for my business are endless," Kim says.
